The Secret of really Learning Word Final –s
And now it’s your turn: /Iz, s, z/
…a trick…
To see what the last sound of a word is, cover the
written s at the end of a word with your finger.
Linking Patterns:
- pattern 1: consonant sound + vowel sound
- pattern 1: word final -ed /dId/ + vowel sound
- pattern 1: word final /s, z, Iz/ + vowel sound
- pattern 2: vowel sound /y, w/ + vowel sound
- pattern 3: consonant + same consonant
- pattern 4: t + y = /t͡ʃ/
- pattern 5: d + y = /d͡ʒ/

Eva, this is another really great presentation.
My students will love it. I especially love the little riddle.
Eva Easton says
Thanks, Michael.
This is the method I used all those years to teach my students word final -s. They catch on immediately to the /Iz/ words…don’t need to know if they’re voiced or voiceless. That eliminates the first group. Then you realize that there are only a handful of voiceless sounds left…the vast majority of all endings sounds are voiced, so if you need to guess…guess “voiced.”
My student would take 15-20 minutes and boom…all figured out. And without long verbal explanations.
