Practice
Write in one or two short sentences what the speaker is saying.
- If I were going to help you, I would have done it already.
- The lights wouldn't be off right now if you'd paid the electric bill last month.
- If you had only diversified your investments, you wouldn't be in this predicament, and your future would be more secure.
- If he were to come, the evening would be perfect.
- If I hadn't happened to run into him downtown yesterday, I wouldn't have known that his brother was still in the hospital.
- If I were to go, I would sit on the aisle.
- I'm sure we would've arrived in time if we'd taken the train.
- If I hadn't found Carl's letter so difficult to read, I could've followed his instructions better.
- If he really looked like his father, he would've been easier to recognize at the airport.
- If it were up to me, that wouldn't be something I would ever consider.
- If I'd been gotten used to the weather earlier, things would be better now.
- If you had known then what you know now, would you have done it anyway?
- Compare:
a) If you couldn't do it, why did you try? = The person tried but couldn't do it.
b) If I couldn't do it, I wouldn't try. = I think I can do it, so I'm going to try.
