The Emperor's New Clothes
A Fairy Tale by Hans Christian Anderson

Once upon a time there was an emperor who loved clothes more than anything else. He cared nothing for his work or parties or the theater. He changed his clothing every hour of the day. He was happy only when he had new clothes.

One day two swindlers came to the city where the emperor lived. They pretended to be weavers who made the finest cloth in the world. Their cloth was extremely beautiful, but it had one amazing quality--only an honest person could see the cloth. Anyone who was a fool could not see it.

The emperor heard about this amazing cloth. "It must be wonderful," he thought. "If I have a suit made out of this cloth, I will be able to know who in my government is a fool. I must order a suit made of this cloth at once."

He called the weavers to the castle immediately. He paid them with a huge bag of gold, and they started to work at once.

In a few days, the emperor went back to check on the weavers, but he couldn't see any cloth. "I can't see anything. Oh, my goodness, this is the worst thing that's ever happened. Can it be really true? I'm a fool? I can't breathe a word of this to anyone. Thank you, thank you, thank you" he said to the weavers with a smile. "I have never seen such cloth in all my life."

The emperor's assistants couldn't see anything either, but they all agreed with the emperor. They praised the weavers. "It's beautiful, it's beautiful."

You should have the weavers make a brand new suit for you, for the procession next week. Everyone agreed and the weavers began to work. Night and day they pretended to work.

On the morning of the procession, the weavers announced, "The emperor's new clothes are ready!" They held up the clothes for everyone to see. Look, how beautiful!

The emperor undressed, and the weavers pretended to put the new suit on the emperor. He looked in the mirror. His assistants all admired his new clothes. "Perfect, wonderful, beautiful colors!"

The procession began. The emperor's servants walked behind him. Then, the emperor marched down the middle of the street, through the whole city. People on the street watched as the emperor walked by. "Isn't the emperor's new suit beautiful, what beautiful colors. The collar of his coat is made of fur."

Suddenly a small child in the crowd yelled, "But the emperor has no clothes!" The people began to whisper. The child was right, and the emperor heard the people.

He knew the child was telling the truth. There was nothing he could do. So he walked down the street, lifted his head higher and higher. He had learned his lesson. Even though the emperor had no clothes on, he still acted like a real, true emperor. The end.
